Inspiration
We love what we do and we pursue the best in ourselves: musical performance is demanding and we always seek perfection, but also enjoyment… and inspiration. It is part of our daily life to look for references in people who do the same thing as us, a mirror in which to look at ourselves, and we usually have that in the musicians we admire the most. This help us have a goal and a reason to improve every day.
And it happened to me recently when I had the opportunity to watch live a dream orchestra, soloist and conductor –non others than Gustavo Dudamel, María Dueñas and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and meet personally this kind of inspiring musician: she is the official keyboardist of this fabulous orchestra, Joanne Pearce Martin.
Mine is the orchestral world, first it was the percussion and now it is the keyboard instruments, those back in the orchestra and alone most of the time. They are barely featured in traditional repertoire, but I’m extremely lucky to play in an orchestra (also a dream orchestra for me) that explores the music of our time, so I have the opportunity to play in all kind of repertoire and enjoy being part of a group of talented musicians and better human beings.
So does the LA Phil under Gustavo Dudamel, whom I saw live during their tour in Barcelona last May, and where Joanne Pearce plays regularly. An orchestra like the LAPhil is a good mirror in which to look: its talented musicians are among the best in the world. So whenever I hear them or see them on recordings and videos, I always look for that percussive melody from the back of the stage, where Joanne is playing, and try to find inspiration. And I always find it.
Hope to see you live soon!
And other inspiring musicians I have been lucky enough to meet. Thanks Adda Symphony for let us share the stage with them! (Joaquín Riquelme and Sarah Willis (Berlin Phil,) Maria Joao Pires and the Labéque Sisters)
