inspiration and admiration

More than honored and fortunate to have been invited to perform at the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute Gala at University Club in NYC, which recognized Gustavo Dudamel this year as the recipient of the 2024 Sophia Award for Excellence. And more than blessed to have had the opportunity to meet him personally and talk to him, one of my role models as a musician and a person. Thanks to Ricardo Llorca and the entire QSSI team for allowing me to be part of a Gala presided over by Her Majesty Queen Sofia and pay tribute to such an important figure in music.

For this occasion I had to play on the piano during the pre-dinner cocktail, where I selected several pieces that I believe are close to Gustavo, such as orchestral selections of South American composers: Margariteña, Santa Cruz de Pacairigua, Fuga con Pajarillo, Danzón no. 2, Estancia’s Danza del trigo, the joropo Barquisimeto, La comparsa, Oblivion or A don Agustín Bardí. I also included some standards as I’m still here, Night and day, Autumn in New York, Deep in my heart (and even music of Joan Manuel Serrat) or movie classics The day of wine and roses, A summer place or The high and the mighty. I also included music by John Williams, to whom Gustavo is very close and is also one of my main influences in music with pieces that I love to play by my own: Main themes from Sabrina (and In the moonlight,) The Fabelmans, JFK, Stanley and Iris, The Patriot, Nice to be around, Yes Georgio, and other melodies as Over the Moon or Can you reed my mind.

It was such a pleasure to play all this music that I hope Gustavo recognized and enjoyed.

What a joy to coincide with maestro Josep Vicent and Fernando Arias from Aria Music! so many concerts and recordings with our beloved Adda Symphony

And thanks Ricardo for your hosting and welcome over my many visits to NY!

I also made a brief visit to Boston and Berklee College, where I learned so much and have such fond memories.
